Manage your OSR harvest for the most reliable results this season with a performance-proven modern Roundup 05-Jun-2017

Today’s oilseed rape crops require the most careful pre-harvest glyphosate management for the greatest reliability and value. Thicker-stemmed, better-branched hybrids grown at lower seed rates and with stay-green agronomy need particular harvest management care; especially with later-maturing varieties and chancy weather. As well as using modern Roundup formulations proven to deliver the most consistent performance under challenging conditions, spray timing needs to be matched to crop structure.

Key Considerations

  • At a traditional spray timing when the vast majority of the pods on the main raceme are mature, more than a third of all the pods on well-branched plants can be immature.
  • For the greatest yield, oil content and sample quality, Roundup spraying should be delayed until the bulk of the pods are sufficiently ripe. This can be 7-10 days later than those on the main raceme. Combining only once both stems and pods are fully fit – which may be 20 or more days after spraying under some conditions – can markedly improve harvesting ease and speed.
  • Roundup treatment consistently allows earlier and easier combining than natural drying and much less pod shattering than diquat desiccationion.

Roundup Harvest Management Guidelines

Apply Roundup® when the crop moisture content of the Oilseed rape seeds is below 30%. This may be determined visually by following the 3 steps detailed below.

  1. Select an area of the crop which is representative of the maturity of the crop. This may be pods in the middle of the main raceme or on side branches depending on the canopy Pick, at random, a total of 20 pods.

  2. Open each pod. If a colour change from green to brown is seen in at least two thirds* of the seeds per pod in at least fifteen of the pods picked, the earliest correct stage for spraying has been reached.

  3. Repeat the procedure in other areas of the crop to check that the assessment is applicable to the entire field. Spray within 4 days, unless the weather is very cool, then the window can be extended to 7 days.

Check pods for timing

Harvest can be started 2-3 weeks after the application.

*If approximately half of the seeds are turning brown, the crop should be ready to spray in 3 days but repeat the procedure to check that the correct stage has been reached.

NB. Spraying too early will lead to poor desiccation. Repeat in several other areas of the field to check for consistency and spray within 4-7 days.

Harvesting

The statutory harvest interval is 14 days, up to 21 days may be necessary before combine harvesting.

Weed stage

For effective control of weeds they must be healthy and actively growing. Weeds that have senesced or died back or are suffering from drought may not be as susceptible.
