What is in store for the future

Developments in conventional plant breeding continue to bring improvements in yield, quality, consistency and ease of management on farm. Advanced crop analytics support and accelerate variety selection to bring the most useful genetic characteristics through from a virtual plant to reality in the glasshouse and in the field.

Dekalb European Oilseed Rape Breeding programme 2010

Here we walk through the high-tech oilseed rape breeding programme which is taking crop yields and performance forward on farm across the wider European area.
From lab to combine, this is where the seeds of farmers' success are developed

As an integrated and vital part of human civilization, plant breeding will play an essential role in safeguarding our future. We are committed to applying advanced technologies and scientific processes towards creating new DEKALB varieties that will help agriculture face the challenges ahead.

This will be accomplished through scientific leadership in four essential areas:

• A rich genetic diversity that is an unsurpassed resource for new discoveries.

• Today’s most sophisticated and efficient technologies to tap into this resource.

• An unsurpassed global infrastructure to test and select those crop varieties that ensure the desired performance.

• A constant pipeline of innovation that farmers around the world can count on year after  year.

That is how DEKALB is helping farmers to always be on the “breeding edge.”

Innovation and yields: a historical look

Whether in corn, sunflower or oilseed rape, Dekalb seeds trace a story of outstanding yield growth over the years. The trend is set to continue as we focus on doubling yields over the next twenty years.

At the forefront of breeding development, biotechnology will increasingly make a difference in our lives.

YieldGard® technology

YieldGard is a breakthrough product that brings new solutions to the age-old problem of European Corn Borer (ECB) and Maize Corn Borer (MCB).  It delivers peace of mind by removing the burden of crop protection from the grower and making it an intrinsic characteristic of the corn itself.

The YieldGard logo on a bag of hybrid maize indicates that the seed inside contains Monsanto’s hi-tech, EU approved, insect control technology.  The YieldGard logo represents the most modern way of fighting insect pests of corn.

In 2007, YieldGard technology was used in 8 EU countries and delivered consistent and reliable results to growers on more than 100 thousand hectares of commercial maize production.
